You can’t use it as your main light source. It’s very good for setting the mood though. If it’s a sleepy winter evening and you’re settling in for a movie, turn the lights off and get the lava lamp out. It’ll make it illuminated enough that you don’t bump into everything if you stand up, but it’ll be low enough to give that cool cinema feel.

A Japanese Kotatsu

Take inspiration from the East with a kotatsu. A kotatsu is a low table that sits in the center of the room. In Japan, they are like a dinner table where you can have your meals, or just sit around and talk with the family. You sit or kneel on a cushion placed on one of the four sides of the kotatsu. In the winter, they often bring out an electric blanket to place over the kotatsu and a wooden board to act as the table surface. It’s a very unconventional idea here in the West, but it has a certain aesthetic charm as well as many practical uses. If you want your living room to be a bit more cultural, you can get one of these.
